* Change to mobile numbers: An important change in mobile phone numbering was introduced in the Fall of 2009. At that time, India started issuing mobile phone numbers with a leading '8x'. These additional mobile numbers will supplement the existing mobile-only '9x' series. This change has become necessary due to the explosive growth of mobile phones in India which is rapidly exhausting '9x' series mobile numbers.

However, unlike the existing '9x' series numbers which were only ever issued to mobile phones, '8x' numbers are widely used in landline phone numbers as area codes (aka STD codes). As a result, where it used to be easy to determine if you were calling an India mobile or landline number, that distinction will become harder to make as the new numbers become more common.

Phone Number Formats for Inbound International Calls to Surat

To make an international phone call to Surat, you will need to dial a phone number properly formatted for either a mobile or landline phone as shown below.

In Surat and throughout India, landline phones and mobile phones have similar, but different phone number formats. The two types of phones use entirely different numbering schemes.

Both types of phone numbers are 10-digits long, but Surat landline phones come in 2 parts: a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit subscriber number.

In contrast, Surat mobile phones are self-contained 10-digits numbers and do not require a separate area code.

To get a complete phone number, you will to plug in the outbound international access code for your originating country and the local subscriber number in Surat.

Note: To cope with a shortage of '9x' series mobile numbers, India has began issuing mobile numbers starting with '8x'. This makes India's already confusing phone numbering system just a bit more complicated. On the plus side though, an older plan to switch over to 11-digit mobile numbers has been shelved - at least until '8x' series numbers are exhausted, too.
